Scale rates for overseas business travel

From time to time HMRC publish up-to-date benchmark scale rates for employees or directors who travel abroad on business. The benchmark rates are intended to represent the accommodation and subsistence expenses that employees incur during a period spent in a large number of foreign countries.

HMRC benchmark scale rates can be used to reimburse expenses such as accommodation, meals, and local travel, in most countries and regions, without a requirement to keep an onerous paper trail, pay tax or national insurance on the amounts or to report on form P11D.

These generous rates are not widely publicised and hence are not widely used by smaller businesses but can often be very beneficial. Contact us to see if they could apply to your business.
