Legal profession put under the spotlight by HMRC

HMRC’s focus on specific sectors continues apace with news that they are launching a taskforce to tackle the legal profession.  In a three year period HMRC have collected more than £500m of additional taxes from a specialist high net worth unit which will lead the attack.  Included in the remit of the task force will be an increased focus on the tax affairs of barristers.

Taskforce teams have been very successful in collecting revenue from what HMRC consider to be high risk sectors, and solicitors and barristers join the ranks of plumbers, restaurant owners, electricians and taxi firms under the HMRC spotlight.
